135. Refining German Word Order

135.  Refining German Word Order

Answers to the previous quiz, getting the word order right..... S V P A N A  PP I

1       Mein Vater (S)  hat (V)  kein Auto (N).
2       Der Computer (S)  ist (V) phantastisch (Adj).
3       Wir (S) kaufen (V)  heute (Adv)) Wurst und Salat (N).
4       Wir (S)  haben (V)  gestern (Adv)  einen guten Film (N)  gesehen (PP).
5       Ich  (S)  will (V)  morgen (Adv)   ein tolles Buch (N)   kaufen (I)  .
6       Wir (S)  spielen (V) jedes Wochenende (Adv)  Tennis (N)  .
7       Kannst (V) du (S) gut (Adv)  schwimmen  (I)  ?
8       Es (S) regnet (V) oft  (Adv)  im Winter  (Adv)  in Australien (Adv) .
9       Möchtest (V) du (S) nächste Woche (Adv) ins Kino (Adv) mitkommen (I)
10     Wollt (V)  ihr (S)  eines Tages (Adv)  auf die Uni (Adv)  gehen (I) ?

In the last post I pointed out that anything can go first in a German sentence provided the verb is the 2nd idea. This is often used for emphasis but logically, when you ask a question, you will first just get the simple answer in normal conversation. Let's look at Number 8 and ask a few questions.

8a   Wo regnet es oft im Winter?  -  In Australien (regnet es oft im Winter).
8b   Wann regnet es oft in Australien? - Im Winter (regnet es oft in Australien).
8c   Regnet es viel im Winter in Australien? - Ja, oft (regnet es im Winter in Australien).

In each case, in conversation, you might well not give a whole sentence but just the simple answer written in blue print.

If any item does go first in the sentence, the verb comes next, then the subject and after that you just apply the SVPANAPPI rule from there on.

Here are a couple more jumbled sentences for you to try. Answer the questions asked

1   Wir haben gestern einen neuen Computer gekauft. Was habt ihr gekauft?

2   Klaus und Inge fahren jedes Jahr in die Alpen.  Wann fahren sie in die Alpen?

3   Ich kaufe heute Brot. Ich kaufe es immer im Supermarkt. Wo kaufst du es?

4 Kristl will mit dem Bus nach Darmstadt fahren. Wohin will Kristl mit dem Bus fahren?

5 Klaus soll morgen mit dem Zug nach Hause kommen. Wie soll er nach Hause kommen?

The last Nightwatchman of Rothenburg - a great tour! He is in black at back in doorway.

  1. Hey Graham!
A huge thanks for this. I'm trying to spruce up my German lately and your blog has proven invaluable - it's very clearly written and extremely helpful.

I would like to ask you about 8, though.
If adverbs are ordered TMP, wouldn't it be "Es regnet im Winter oft in Australien"?
I can stomach 'often' being a definition of time, but 'in winter' being a manner?..
    What am i missing?

    Anyway, many thanks again!

    1. Hi Quitty,

When two adverbs are used from the same category ( 'often' & 'winter' are both expresions of Time), the general expression precedes the specific / more precise term. Glad blog is helping. Cheers GF
