89.  Other uses for Numbers & Months of the Year

There are so many uses for numbers in everyday life and we should look at a few of these.

Address:  (Adresse)

A:     Wo wohnen Sie?  (Where do you live?)
B:     Meine Adresse ist Smithstraße einhundertdreiundsiebzig Newcastle Australien.

Age:  (Alter)

A:    Wie alt sind Sie?  (How old are you?)
B:    Ich bin neunundvierzig Jahre alt.
A:    Und wann haben Sie Geburtstag? (When is your birthday?)
B:    Ich habe am sechsten August Geburtstag (on the sixth of August)

Months (Monate)

Januar, Februar, März, April, Mai, Juni, Juli, August, September, Oktober, November Dezember.

Telephone (Telefon)

German telephone numbers have an area code as well as the home number. Normally speaking, when you give your phone number to somebody, you usually give it in pairs e.g....

Meine Telefonnummer ist  vierundzwanzig  einunddreißig  achtundsiebzig [24 31 78 ]

Ah, yes, I forgot to mention last time that the word for zero is ....  null. You will need it often!

Buying something

A:    Was kostet das Hemd? (shirt)
B:    Das Hemd kostet fünfzig Euro zwanzig.
A:    Wieviel? Fünfzig Euro zwanzig? Das ist aber teuer! ( Wow* that is dear)
B:    Ja, aber es ist sehr schön, nicht? very nice, isn't it?)

*  aber normally translates as but,  however here it just strengthens the schön.
